With much fear and trepidation…
Feb 1st, 2008 by Kristi
We worry about the weather.
It’s not so much the cold that bothers us. It’s a balmy 30 degrees today and I took Will to work in just a sweater and button up shirt (and pants and underwear and socks and bra and boots). The cold is fine. It’s the snow. Specifically, the record breaking amounts of snow. More specifically, the potentially roof-breaking amounts of snow.
I took some pictures to illustrate the magnitude of the amount of snow in my yard and on my roof, but the magic tube that connects the camera to the internets is not working for some reason. Let me put it this way: the kids can no longer play outside for fear that they will sink into the four feet of snow piled on either side of the sidewalk. I tried to do Will and his broken back a favor by shoveling the sidewalk for him, but I had to quit when it became apparent that my little 5′2 frame wasn’t going to get the snow up onto the ginourmous mountain-like snow bank.
The governor has declared North Idaho a disaster emergency area. Because on top of the problems with icy roads, potential avalanches, the occasional meandering moose and sidewalks covered in a 7-11 slush-like icee material, there’s the ever growing worry of the roofs of town collapsing simultaneously.
Which was why I wasn’t surprised to hear Charlie say, “Hey! There’s someone shoveling on that roof!” And sure enough, someone was shoveling snow off our neighbor’s roof. As for us, we’re going to ask the landlords what to do about it. Because there’s no way in hail Will is getting up on our rented roof.
In the meantime, life goes on. We sludge along the sludgy roads at 25 mph to get the kids to tae kwon do and what not…ps Charlie broke a pine board WITH HIS BARE HAND on Tuesday. True story. And we do our school stuff and watch movies and play games and marvel at all the whiteness that surrounds us. It’s actually very pretty.
And since I can’t get my own pictures up, I’ll post some other people’s local pictures, just to give a little perspective.

You said bra…..
Bra. BRA BRA BRA BRA BRA BRA BRA BRA.
Those pictures totally reminded me of this one episode of Little House on the Prairie. It was a good one, too.
But I really hope your roof doesn’t collapse.
Me, too. That would suck.
Wow, that’s a lot of snow.
Perhaps you need to start making an igloo or something incase the roof does go.
Dang!!! I bet this is when home schooling is a blessing/curse: No snow days for the kids means no break for either of you guys! Not that you can’t proclaim your own break days, but, well, you know what I meant…
Yeah, I just found out today that the public schoolers had two snow days. Not us.
Good GRIEF.
The power in our town was OUT all day on Wednesday - not a good thing during a winter storm with dangerous lows - so I know the worry of which you speak. My husband and I are going to do some serious disaster readiness this weekend, like moving to someplace that doesn’t have stupid weather. Wish us luck.
We haven’t had the super extreme cold for more than a few days. We’re usually in the twenties. So, uh, yeah I’d high tail it out of Freezerville if I were you.
I can’t help it: I still believe in global warming. It just isn’t happening quickly enough for North Idaho.
This is sooooo global warming.
We’re just seeing the beginnings of this week’s storm around here where roof ‘raking’ is a regular occurrence and the walmarts and lowes can’t keep the damn rakes in stock!
So Charlie can break pine boards now, hey? That’s power! How will you ever tell him ‘no’ again?
Oh I’ve got great powers over my boy Charlie. He knows better than to mess with me.
I am soo glad that I do not live in Idaho after seeing those pictures.
It’s not as bad as living in Africa hot Texas. I promise.
So if I were to refer to that as a winter wonderland, you would probably slap me?
Yeah, we’re feeling down here too but not as much as you are! O-My-lanta!
your pictures make me so glad to live in Florida.
